What big move have you been putting off because the timing just hasn’t seemed right? Have you been telling yourself that you just aren’t ready yet?Do you have an idea to launch a cool coaching program but fear that you don’t have the expertise or the contacts to make it happen?
Maybe you’ve always wanted to live in Italy for a year, but you’re afraid to put your coaching practice on hold. Or maybe you’re stuck in a cycle of classes and research and reading instead of just putting yourself out there and inviting clients to hire you.
My big move was motherhood.
For several years before I gave birth to my three year old daughter, I went back and forth about becoming a mom. I love my work so much that I just didn’t know if I had room in my life or my heart to be the kind of parent I should be.
So, I waited. And I waited.
Then, I decided motherhood wasn’t for me at all.
Then it was…but later. Definitely later.
Well, all that changed four years ago, and now I’m delighted and shocked to say that my hubby and I have a little toddler.
Holy sh*tballs! It still shocks me to say that. But the truth is, nothing has ever felt more right.
So, this got me thinking… what are you putting off because you are afraid, unsure, or confused?
Here’s what I learned: Make your move BEFORE you’re ready.
Price Pritchett says, “Getting ready is frankly a stalling tactic, an act of anxiety, a con game you’re working on yourself. You are already positioned to escape to a higher plane of performance. If you wait until you can get it perfect, you will never get it at all.
First you act, then you frame out the details of your strategy. Move on your dream… start… and let what happens help you develop a coherent game plan.”
People say that life offers no guarantees, and though I understand that sentiment, I disagree. There’s one thing you can count on, and that’s you.
You can keep your word with yourself and regardless of the outcome, you can end the day (or your life) knowing you did everything you could, swung for the fences and left it all out on the field.
I often see clients get caught up in the minutia of planning before they begin the pursuit of a goal. I know for me, this was the case. I wanted a guarantee that I could juggle being a mom and running my empire.
But the truth is, I can do all the preparation in the world, and I still won’t know for certain how my life will actually unfold. So, rather than wait for a sure thing, I took hold of the one thing I can always count on, which is me.
The same is true for you.
So, where have you been loosey-goosey with your commitments to yourself? What have you been thinking about without acting on? Are you cheating yourself by talking a good game and then doing nothing to back it up?
It’s time to change that. I can tell you from personal experience that the best way to grow and sustain your confidence is to keep your commitments with yourself, even the scary ones.
At the end of the day, all you have is your word.
So, what are you waiting for? Let me know below…
Wonderful! And right on on the point?
Glad it was helpful, Roberta! Thanks for your comment 😉
So timely!!! I Made a landing page on my coaching website last night for a specific coaching for actors idea, and this morning I decided I wasn’t ready to roll it out yet– and I’m not not! Its not fully fleshed out, I want to join your power group or do private mentoring with you first, etc.. But now you’ve got me reconsidering. It’s scary, but I love the “start now and figure it out later’ idea so much. Perfect timing. Thank you!!
This is great, Heather. I’m so excited the juices are flowing for you! Remember this: You can always course correct. So if you feel like you’re 90% of the way there, dive in! You’ll learn so much from DOING and you can always make changes. But if you feel like you’re not near that 90% mark, then certainly, give yourself that extra time to flesh things out.
The good thing is, you’re well on your way. You’re not putting this off for next year or the year after — you’re in the middle of getting it done and sometimes making the decision to actually DO something is the hardest part. So keep it up! 🙂
